A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Bruce Schimmel, MNYCA President
As we end our 135th year, we are excited about our future. For the first time in two years, I am happy to tell you about our events that we have scheduled for 2022. Our first event will be our Annual Meeting. This will be held on Wednesday, May 18th, at Macaluso’s in Hawthorne NJ. In trying to follow safety protocol, this meeting will be a three-hour cocktail party on their outside veranda. We will be electing our new Board at this meeting and will announce our Scholarship winners. Now that the Baseball lockout is finally over, we will be following up the Annual Meeting with our New York Yankee game on Wednesday, June 29th. This will be a 1:00 game in the Audi Suite. This is a wonderful experience and a great way to network with your friends and customers. I have found that even Met fans have fun. On Tuesday, September 13th, we will have our MNYCA Golf Outing. Our outing will be returning to Neshanic Station. It is a terrific golf course with a great caterer. We are also planning a forum during June. It will be on supply chain and logistics. Information will be sent out shortly. I would like to thank everyone for their loyalty and patience during the last couple of years. It has been very difficult not having in-person events but that is all changing now and we look forward to seeing everyone during the next few months.
MEMBER SPOTLIGHT - COATINGS WORLD
In 1996, a new journal titled Coatings World was launched. While there were already four other coatings magazines in the United States alone, this new journal was unique in offering the following: global circulation, staff written business reports, and technical papers that did not promote a single product or company. More than 25 years later, Coatings World is now the largest magazine, web site and weekly eNewsletter in the global coatings industry, reaching over 100,000 readers each month.
Coatings World was developed by Dale Pritchett who has served as its publisher from the beginning. He tapped the well-known editor of the Paint & Coatings Journal, Abel Banov, to help him launch the new venture.
From the beginning, the magazine was present at every major coatings show and event worldwide. With Abel’s retirement, the job of head editor eventually came to Kerry Pianoforte. Under Kerry’s leadership, the editorial staff grew to having correspondents based in Europe, China, India, South America, Africa and Russia.
Coatings World has exhibited at every US Paint Show, European Coatings Show and CHINACOAT since 1996 and is the official publisher of the CHINACOAT Show Daily, which is handed out to thousands of attendees as they enter the show floor each day. Coatings World along with Ink World has also exhibited at numerous Asia Pacific Coatings Shows, Latin American Coatings Shows, the Brazilian Coatings Show ABRAFATI and industry meetings such as The Coatings Summit and CEPE.
For the last 15 years, in conjunction with Ringier Trade Media Ltd., Coatings World has published a Chinese language edition. Published seven times per year in Simplified Chinese, Coatings & Ink China reaches a qualified controlled readership of 36,900 (including print and digital).
One of the most popular Coatings World features is our annual ranking of the top coatings manufacturers in the world. The Coatings World Top Companies Report comes out every July and has been called the definitive report on the coatings market by Forbes magazine. It ranks every coatings manufacturer in the world that produces at least $100 million in sales. Our 2021 Top Companies Report featured 81 coatings companies from around the world.
Another popular feature is our Buyers Guide issue and year round online Buyers Guide directory, which lists every manufacturer of raw materials and equipment in the global coatings industry. We also have a Distributors Guide, which lists each distributor’s contact info, regional coverage, principals, and product categories.
Our CEO Forum, which is published every March, is another reader favorite. Each year we interview CEOs of paint and coatings from around the globe. This year’s report featured insights from 10 CEOs including the top players in the industry – Axalta, AkzoNobel and PPG.
Additionally, the Coatings World job bank is a helpful tool for those looking for work in the industry, as companies are able to post available job openings. Located in Montvale, New Jersey, Coatings World is part of Rodman Media, which has tripled in size over the last 25 years.
Take Me Out to the Ball Park.. NY Yankees v. Oakland A’s
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Audi Club to enjoy a day of camaraderie and baseball on Wednesday, June 29th, at 1:05 PM.
Eastern Coatings Show Continues to Shine
Kerry Pianoforte, Editor 12.08.21 - Coatings World
The Eastern Coatings Show was held November 17-19 at Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City. Despite the challenges of hosting an event during the COVID-19 pandemic, all indications were that this biennial show met the expectations of attendees and exhibitors. The show’s organizers reported nearly 1,000 attendees.
"Post-pandemic attendance was extremely positive,” said Chris Mangano, president of the Eastern Coatings Federation. “Overwhelmingly people were very happy to be there and enjoyed the personal interactions. In conversations with many people, all said they accomplished much more at this conference than they expected. I would like to acknowledge Harrah’s as they were an exceptional partner throughout the process over the past year. I also would like to thank the whole board for their hard work. Carl Sullivan, our technical chairman did a great job. The quality of the technical papers was excellent and the keynotes were all homeruns.”
Sarah Eckersley, global director of R&D and TS&D for Coating Materials, Monomers & Plastics Additives at Dow Chemical kicked off the conference with her presentation "Sustainability in Coatings - By Accident or Design?".
The Eastern Coatings Show also offered two prominent keynote presentations on Supply Chain Challenges. Attendees learned critical information on production, logistics, geopolitics and forecasts affecting the future of raw materials.
Michael Levely, the senior director responsible for Supply Chain and Customer Service for Dow’s North American Coatings and Performance Monomers business gave the keynote presentation on the first day of the show.
Dan Pickard, Partner at Wiley Law in Washington, DC, spoke on U.S. trade policies, tariffs and relevance of the Department of Commerce in his keynote presentation on the second day of the show.
Day two concluded with a networking forum, “Businesswomen in Paint and Coatings.”
